
WorkKeys
To be certified as a Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff within the State of Alabama, you must possess a college degree (Associate's degree or higher) or have a high school diploma/G.E.D. and take and take and pass the WorkKeys assessment for law enforcement officers.

The WorkKeys examination, developed by ACT, serves as a jobs skills assessment designed to measure essential workplace skills. Many employers and educational institutions use it to determine a candidate's readiness for various job-related duties and responsibilities. The WorKeys assessment is comprised of three sections:

Applied Math
Tests mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills needed in the workplace. Passing score for Applied Math is a 3 or higher.

Workplace Documents
Assesses the ability to read and understand work-related materials like memos and policies. Passing score for Workplace Documents is 4 or higher.

Graphic Literacy
Measures the ability to interpret charts, graphs, and diagrams used on the job. Passing score for Graphic Literacy is 4 or higher.

​WorkKeys Administration
You may take the WorkKeys assessment free of charge through the Personnel Board of Jefferson County. The WorkKeys is administered two Wednesdays each month at 8:30am and 1:00pm. The administration dates for the remainder of the the 2025 calendar year are listed below.
